Salted Chocolate-Pecan Toffee

This was a fine way to end a busy week, or start a busy weekend. Ben and Eli both helped, Ben marveling at how much sugar the recipe called for, and both boys loving the sight of me wearing heavy-duty work gloves when it was time to stir the vanilla into the boiling sugar (somehow we don’t have oven mitts). When I asked Tony if he wanted a taste (we’ll give most of it away) he said, “Are you kidding? I saw everyone in my family throw a stick of butter into the pot. Yeah, I want a taste.” I’ve never made candy before, but it turns out to be a lot less work than an equal amount of cookies, and needless to say, it’s plenty delicious. We might be trying out some more recipes during this holiday baking season. Stay tuned.

Tony’s comment especially cracked me up. Sounds like cooking at Thanksgiving, no? Nick has been looking for candy recipes–he wants to give candy away this year–so we’ll put this on the list. Thanks!

This looks so good. I want to trow some sticks of butter in and try it myself.

But will it last til the 20th or will you have to make more? Can I teach the boys to make rum balls?

I can hardly believe you haven’t made candy before! How on earth have I made something you haven’t? 🙂 I have a whole candy-making kit, with the spiffy thermometer, and the little molds, and everything. It’s great fun.

I just can’t really do the whole breakfast/lunch/dinner cooking thing, apparently. Candy, though? Anytime. 🙂

This looks amazing! You are such an overachiever — but that said, I do love having overachieving friends who give homemade toffee as presents 🙂

Oh, that picture looks so yummy I can almost taste the salt-and-chocolate sweetness!

I made marshmallows for the first time this year and was amazed by a) how yummy homemade marshmallows are and b) how easy it was! And the recipe yielded so many more than a cookie recipe usually does.

    Have a wonderful holiday week!
